Operational database

Woman reading through the embedded analytics glossary

What is an operational database?

An operational database, or transactional database, is a database management system designed to run the day-to-day operations or business transactions where large amounts of data can be stored, updated, retrieved, modified and processed in real-time. Running analytical queries directly on an operational database is not recommended due to risk for suboptimal performance on both ends.
